Sussex 1835 - tactile map without braille

Introduction - Description - Towns on map - Maps

Introduction

This page explains a map of Sussex intended for blind users who cannot read Braille. I am developing the maps, and seek comments. I have some maps of other counties for users who read Braille, and users who read large print.

The map shows towns marked by solid circles, linked by lines to help the user find them. Some of the lines are along roads, but others are not. One town on each line is marked by a single upper-case letter of the ordinary Roman alphabet.

Towns shown are parliamentary boroughs and polling places in 1835. The Description section says what is on the map. The Towns section gives a sequence of places along lines within the county. The Maps section has a link to the map, which is in pdf (Acrobat) format, and to a page describing the way to produce a tactile map from the pdf file. On another page is a general introduction to this series of maps of the English counties which are intended to be accessible to blind and partially sighted people.

Description

There is a solid circle at the top left of the map. It is followed by the title and web address, to help sighted users. The top of the map is the North. The county boundary is shown by a dotted line. The division between East and West Sussex is also shown by a dotted line. The sea is shown by an area of textured dots. The Chapman County Code SSX is in large letters near the bottom right corner of the map. A ten mile scale bar is at bottom left.

Sussex is a coastal county, about 75 miles east to west by about 25 miles north to south. To the south is the sea. To the west is Hampshire. To the North is Surrey at the western end, and Kent at the eastern end round to the eastern tip on the coast.
