Introduction - Description - Locations - Surrounding counties - Maps - Home page
The map of Yorkshire differs from that of most counties in this series.
It shows the boundaries of the
North, West and East Ridings, and one town in each. There are separate maps for each Riding.
For these see:
East Riding
- North Riding
- West Riding
Graphics linked from the maps section of this page produce a
large print map of Yorkshire in 1835, and a tactile map with
braille lettering. This page
explains and describes the maps. The Description
section says what is on the map.
The Maps section has links to the maps, which
are in pdf (Acrobat) format, and to a page describing the way to
produce a tactile map with braille letters from the pdf file. On
another page is a general introduction
to this series of maps of the English counties which are intended
to be accessible to blind and partially sighted people.
The Genuki pages for Yorkshire
have more information about the county, its records, and all its towns and parishes.
There is a solid circle at the top left of the map. The title
follows it at the top of the map, which is the North. The county and Riding
boundaries are shown by a dotted line. The Chapman County Code YKS
is in large letters in the bottom right corner of the map. Towns are large
dots, with the name of the town nearby. A ten
mile scale bar is in the bottom left corner. Yorkshire is a coastal
county, about 100 miles east to west by about 80 miles north to
south.
Directions on map - West is left, East is right, North is up, South is down.
Other towns are shown on 4 maps:
Abbreviations on the map are 3 letter Chapman County Codes
Names of surrounding counties surrounding Yorkshire are shown on the map by their 3 letter Chapman County Codes. Going clockwise from the south east of the county, on the south are Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Cheshire; on the west are Lancashire and Westmorland; on the North is Durham.
